About Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef
Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef is a 21st century conservation organisation working across the Great Barrier Reef. Combining leading science with meaningful citizen action and digital innovation, their mission is to drive people-powered reef conservation that can be scaled up to meet the escalating threats facing coral reefs around the world.
My Role at Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef
As an ambassador, it was my responsibility to document my travels and encounters via social media, both for Citizens GBR and STA Travel. I was present predominantly on Instagram and Facebook, utilising their Story features. I was also able to document my experience through photography and videography, making several short videos for their socials.
My 6 week internship
I gained insight within conservation methods such as photo identification research, local government and organisation sponsorships and community education via social media and campaigns. I worked with many organisations, biologists and volunteers so I have learned from people from all walks of life. I believe my outgoing personality and ambition combined with my diverse digital marketing skills allow me to communicate and convert effectively within audience or organisation relationships.
During my time with Citizens, I was able to generate more than 100 leads by signing up tourists and locals via email marketing, allowing people to have a personal profile with CGBR, allowing them to contribute to citizen science and sustainability projects in the future.
Marine Conservation Organisations
During my time at Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a variety of organisations dedicated to marine conservation and sustainable tourism. These included Fitzroy Island Resort, where I gained insights into turtle rehabilitation and coral restoration efforts, and Reef Check Australia, where I participated in citizen science initiatives to protect coral reefs.
Additionally, I worked with the Great Barrier Reef Aquarium (Reef HQ) to understand the impacts of plastic pollution on marine life and engaged with Reef Ecologic in reef restoration projects. Through these experiences, I refined my skills in environmental research, community outreach, and advocacy, contributing to the mission of protecting one of the world's most precious ecosystems.
Furthermore, I participated in the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators (AMPTO) targeted Crown of Thorns Starfish (COTS) control programme, playing a role in preserving the health and biodiversity of the Great Barrier Reef.
Social Media Awareness
Throughout my time with each organisation, I immersed myself in their research and ongoing projects, striving to absorb as much knowledge and expertise as possible. This enabled me to effectively document my experiences through video content. Below, you'll find a selection of videos I created to share on Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef's social media platforms:
